Vehicle theft in Sevenoaks

On the evening of Wednesday 19th March 2025, between approximately 2000 and 2100 hours, a Land Rover Range Rover (Crime Report: 46/47083/25) was stolen from a driveway in the YC11 – Town and St Johns beat area. The vehicle theft is suspected to have occurred through a vehicle relay theft technique.

The stolen vehicle, a grey Land Rover, Range Rover, was discovered abandoned two days later by a local beat officer. It was found concealed in a garage block on Kennedy Gardens, Sevenoaks. The vehicle has been seized for forensic examination.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Kent Police online or via 101. Please reference Crime Report number 46/47083/25 when providing information.

Understanding Relay Thefts

Relay theft is a method used by criminals to steal vehicles without needing physical keys. Thieves use electronic devices to receive signals from car keys inside homes and transmit them to another device near the vehicle. This tricks the car into thinking the key is present, allowing thieves to unlock and start the vehicle.

Crime Prevention Advice

To prevent vehicle relay thefts, I would advise residents to consider the following measures:

  • Use a Faraday pouch or signal blocking box to store vehicle keys, preventing them from being scanned by relay devices.
  • Install additional security measures such as steering wheel locks or trackers to deter theft.
  • Park vehicles in well-lit areas or garages, where possible, and avoid leaving them unattended with keys nearby.
  • Consider installing CCTV that has coverage of where your vehicle is parked.
