Pubs, clubs and bars in Dover and the surrounding towns have been praised for their part in creating a safer night out across the district. Seven licensed venues were recognised for their efforts at the Best Bar None Awards which were organised by Kent Police in partnership with Dover District Council. Best Bar None is a voluntary accreditation scheme supported by the Home Office and drinks industry that aims to improve standards in the evening and nighttime economy. The awards were held on Wednesday 3 December 2025 in Kearsney Abbey, where the seven premises were given an accreditation and two of the establishments, The Eight Bells Wetherspoons in Dover, and Sir Norman Wisdom Wetherspoons in Deal, each received a Community Spirit Award as well. The award is given to those who are seen to have gone above and beyond to make a difference in creating a safer, community-focused environment. Working together to keep communities safeKent Police has worked with partner agencies including local councils to establish the nationally recognised Best Bar None scheme across the county. District Commander for Dover, Chief Inspector Liz Cokayne-Delves said: ‘This national accreditation programme is more than just a badge on the door. It represents a commitment to safety, professionalism, and customer care in venues where people can enjoy themselves with confidence.‘Within the district, Best Bar None plays a vital role in raising standards, preventing crime, and reducing serious violence, including violence against women and girls, as well as tackling anti-social behaviour.’ Councillor Gordon Cowan, Dover District Council Cabinet Member for Licensing, said: ‘We are very pleased to welcome the latest Best Bar None accreditations, and to continue to support this initiative. Best Bar None helps to identify well-run pubs, bars, clubs and other businesses that serve alcohol, to focus on the safety of the customer, and to make sure the district continues to be a great place to live, work, visit and socialise.’
