Whilst on patrol in the Acton Lane, Wittersham area today, officers observed a local youth riding a small electric mini motorbike. The vehicle appeared unsuitable for the rider's age and size and, despite being electric, was capable of travelling at significant speed.

The young male admitted he had been riding the bike recreationally and stated he was unaware that it was not legal for use on public roads.

As the vehicle was being used unlawfully, it was seized and will now be destroyed. The rider will also have the difficult task of explaining the loss of the bike to his parents.

The youth, who is nearly 16 years old and is considering obtaining a moped licence in the near future, was given words of advice regarding the consequences of riding uninsured and unlicensed vehicles. He was informed that any future offences could result in penalty points and a fine. These points would remain active when he obtains a full driving licence, potentially leading to the loss of that licence shortly after gaining it through the totting-up process.

We would encourage parents and guardians to ensure that any vehicles purchased for young people are legal and appropriate for use, and to remind them of the importance of complying with road traffic legislation.
