Westgate

Your Neighbourhood Policing Team is made up of Kent Police beat officers who are dedicated to keeping your community safe. They focus on preventing crime and antisocial behaviour, responding to local concerns, and building strong relationships with residents, community groups and local businesses.

Our officers will:

  • patrol to deter crime and reassure the public

  • hold regular engagement activities in the area, including attending community meetings to share advice and listen to concerns

  • work with partner agencies including councils, schools, charities, and local groups

  • tackle issues like antisocial behaviour, repeat offending, and vulnerability

  • build trust by being visible, approachable, and responsive

Neighbourhood policing is a key part of Kent Police’s commitment to being community-focused, visible, and responsive.

Local Priority Issues

Priority Action taken

Antisocial behaviour - general.

Issued 15 October 2025

Our officers carry out daily foot patrols in Canterbury City Centre, focusing on places where antisocial behaviour has been reported. We regularly patrol outside McDonald’s and along St George’s Street, where we know groups of young people often gather from around 3pm. Our officers speak with these young people and work to prevent issues from developing.

We also hold street briefings with Whitefriars Security officers and work closely with the Canterbury Business Improvement District (BID) Team to make sure we are working together to keep the area safe.

In December 2025, we visited Station Road West Car Park with the Homelessness Outreach Team from Canterbury City Council. This joint visit helped us speak with people who were rough sleeping in the area and offer support.

In November 2025, we identified a group of young people involved in antisocial behaviour. We worked with our Child Centred Policing Team so that early support and education could be given to those involved.

E-scooters/nuisance motorcycles.

Issued 15 October 2025

Our Community Safety Unit works closely with the Traffic Enforcement Team at Canterbury City Council to tackle illegal e‑scooters and nuisance motorcycles. We carry out joint patrols, and when officers see e‑scooters being ridden in public, they stop them and seize them because their use on public roads and paths is illegal. During a targeted operation in the city centre, officers seized several e‑scooters as part of this work.

In November and December 2025, officers also patrolled Blackfriars Street after receiving reports of motorcycles and electric bikes being ridden through the pedestrian‑only zone. As a result, officers stopped those involved and issued tickets to people committing offences.

Road safety issues.

Issued 15 October 2025

Officers have conducted speed checks in November 2025 at the following locations which have been identified by the public as areas where speeding was taking place:
- Orchard Street, St Dunstans, 27 vehicles checked - one of which was recorded speeding
- Palace Street, Kings Mile, 10 vehicles checked - none of which were recorded speeding

We will continue to monitor reports of speeding and other road safety issues and focus our attention on areas highlighted to continue to tackle road safety issues.
